The Riverwest Currents is a monthly newspaper appearing in print and online. Produced by local residents for local residents in Riverwest and surrounding Milwaukee neighborhoods, the Currents is an example of citizen journalism. I built the Currents' original site around 2001, and later ported it to MovableType, one of the best early blogging systems that was inexpensive to license for commercial use and could be built out to function well for large scale content management. (Movable Type is now open source.) In 2007 New Local Media put together a new design and a new, more accessible, open source content management system for the Currents that simplifies online publishing for teams of authors and editors.
