Based in Port Washington, WI and in print since 1966, SAILING is a photo-intensive, national magazine about sailing, yacht design, boat tests, nautical gear and technology, sailing technique, and sailing news, as well as hard-hitting expressions of opinion. SAILING's previous site was composed of static HTML pages. In 2008, New Local Media created an entirely new, dynamically updatable site powered by open source Content Management Software. The CMS supports any number of user accounts with different access privileges for general users, authors, editors, and others involved in the production of the online magazine.
SAILING's front page design now offers a dynamically resizing, enlargeable "Photo of the Week" with links to a directory of photographers with information about them, links to their websites and ways to contact them. The magazine's columnists are highlighted as well as the main current feature article. Along with ad management functions, the SAILING site has basic interactive, community/social networking features, a comment system, and an interactive events calendar. SEO optimization and backup/restore features were included with many other tools for site administrators. Additionally, when mobile device browsers encounter the SAILING site, they are automatically presented with a trimmed-down page layout to accommodate their small screens.
